How to File a Virginia Tax Amendment

Prepare a Virginia Tax Amendment for the 2023 tax year. To amend an accepted Virginia State Income Tax Return for the 2023 or previous tax year you will need to complete Form 760. In comparison, the IRS requires a different Form - Form 1040X -to amend an IRS return (do not use Form 1040 for an IRS Amendment).

The IRS could issue a notice for you to correct a mistake in your tax return, or you could spot the mistake on your own. Should you or the IRS revise any of your tax returns, the IRS will inform the Virginia Tax Agency, indicating the necessity for filing a Virginia Tax Amendment.
