Prepare a State Income Tax Return

You can fully prepare your state taxes for one or multiple states on eFile.com, but they can only be e-filed with your IRS return.

Per IRS/State policy - not eFile.com - you cannot just e-file one or more state returns without also e-filing the federal return at the same time or same site with the exception of the state of California. This policy is because the IRS and state agencies share income tax data.

Follow the steps below if you have already e-filed your IRS return but need to complete just one or more state returns.

Step
Description
1. Sign up / Sign in to eFile.com

Step 1: Sign up to eFile.com, If you do not already have an account.

Step 2: Sign in to eFile.com.

2. State Return

Start with the Name & Addresses section and select as many state tax returns as you need to prepare. Then, see these instructions on how to ONLY prepare state returns.

3. Promo Code

Once you complete the state return, follow the checkout process. On the page listed on Step 8 (Part 2), enter the following promo code for STATE ONLY returns: eStateFed

Important: If your federal return is already free, this promo code will not be valid since there is nothing to discount; continue through the checkout process to generate a printable copy of your state return(s) for you to mail; see printing and mailing instructions.

4. Refund, Payment and Copy of Tax Return

If you are expecting a tax refund, on Step 10 (Option 1), select I want to receive a check by mail. If you owe state taxes, either include a check with a voucher with your return or use the payment link on this page and pay your taxes directly with the state agency before or after you have mailed in the state tax return. Your completed state tax return is stored as a PDF file in your My Account. Download the PDF file, print, sign, and mail it to the respective state address. Select from this list of states.

5. Tax Deadline

If you are expecting a tax refund, the April Tax Day deadline should be of no concern to you as you would not face penalties if you miss the deadline. However, you will need to prepare your return and print it by October 15 as the IRS closes e-filing and thus online preparation by this date.

7. Benefit from eFile.com to Submit Your Taxes Next Year
