When, Why to File a Previous Year Return?
Do you owe taxes for a previous tax year to the IRS? If so, estimate potential late filing and/or late payment penalties. Tip: file as soon as possible - and pay as much or little as you can afford - so you reduce or eliminate your late filing penalties, as late filing penalties are higher than late payment penalties. Find ways to pay your taxes even if you don't have the funds now. The biggest reason to file a return is if you owe money - over the years, you will have accrued penalties and will want to pay this debt. This will help you settle your balance with the IRS and assure that any future tax refunds are not claimed for past tax debts.
You may also want to get your return to the IRS simply to be sure they have all your records. If you have income and are required to file returns each year, mail a completed return so taxes can be assessed. Even if you will not get a refund you were owed, the IRS will have your past information from previous years.
See IRS tax return mailing addresses based on the state you reside. The state mailing address is on the state income tax form. On eFile.com, we also have tax forms for other tax years; for the current and future years, see tax planning tips to help you balance your taxes.
The forms below are able to be filled in online, but they will have to be printed and mailed since previous year returns cannot be e-filed. File your returns online each year to avoid handling complicated tax forms - sign up for a free eFile.com account and file your current year return now.
