Should you need your original proof of identity documents within 60 days, originals will be returned after 60 days, no return envelope required, but as an option, you can include a prepaid Express Mail or courier envelope. When applying for an ITIN, consider doing so in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or IRS TACs. If for any reason your original documents are not returned, contact the IRS. You will receive a letter from the IRS assigning your tax identification number usually within seven weeks if you qualify for an ITIN and your application is complete. After application processing, the IRS will send you your ITIN through the mail to the address on Form W-7.
Option 3: In Person Delivery
Submit your ITIN application in-person using the services of an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent - view the link to find internal and US locations. You will not have to mail in your documents as listed above with this option.
Option 4: By Appointment
Make an appointment and submit your ITIN application at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. This will also prevent you from having to mail your proof of identity and foreign status document.
