Massachusetts Income Tax Return Instructions

This page details specific information and instructions that may apply to your state income tax return. The steps below show you how to add your state return(s) and manually edit or add certain forms that may require additional input.

How to Complete and File MA Tax Return?

eFile will generate your state income tax return as you work on your federal return since most of the state entries can be found in that section. However, some states require additional entries - follow the table below if you have to add a form or contact us with questions.

How To?
Description
A: Access MA Forms
Step 1: Sign in to eFile.com
Step 2: Select State Taxes on the left menu.
On the right page, select I'd like to see the forms I've filled out or search for a form.
Step 3: Scroll to the Massachusetts state forms drop-down and select the right down arrow.
Step 4: Click the form in question and review or edit the entries and save. You can also use the search box to search for other forms or select from the links below the search box.
Step 5: Select Add Form next to the form name, then complete, save, and continue.
B: Rent Deductions on Rent Paid in MA
Add the MA - Income Tax Form - or Income Tax Page for MA - see above. Once the page is added, go through the questions and you will be asked about the rent deduction during the interview. After you have added your information, save and continue.
The entries will then show for residents and part-year residents Massachusetts Form 1 Line 14a or Massachusetts Form 1-NR PY Line 18a -
Residents and part-year residents should then divide the total amount by 2 so the allowable amount will show on: Massachusetts Form 1 Line 14, or Massachusetts Form 1-NR PY on Line 18.
C: Massachusetts Tax Return Residency Status
You are a nonresident if you are not a full-year or a part-year resident of MA. This status is based on your residency status and not on the US Visa you hold.
In case your employer incorrectly withheld Massachusetts income taxes, file an MA nonresident/part-year resident return here on eFile.com or Form 1-NR/PY and request a refund. Submit a letter from your employer along with the return which verifies that you didn't work or live in Massachusetts.
